When tragedy occurs somewhere in the Flynn Family, everyone comes together for support. Ian Adds, service superintendent at our Victoria branch, experienced this for himself when his friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Ian has faced some tough times lately. Two of his friends passed away from cancer; one of his fellow Flynn employees was diagnosed; and the big whammy – the close friend was also diagnosed. His close friend is the same as age as Ian which really hit home for him.

This motivated Ian to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Last year, he completed a 500 km bike ride from Port Hardy to Victoria on Vancouver Island in five days. He raised $1,500.

This year, he is upping the stakes by aiming to raise $2,500 for Gifts For The Cure – a national program supporting the most promising clinical trials across Canada. All his donations will be matched four times over. If he reaches his goal of $2,500, a total of $10,000 will be donated directly to Gifts For The Cure.

Ian will complete the same 500 km five day ride this year with another 145 km race on the sixth day. In order to achieve this immense feat of endurance, Ian sets three days aside for major bike rides every week and hits the gym on the other days. He also uses a stationary bike to train.

Apart from raising money, Ian’s goal is to raise awareness. “It’s about getting the word out,” Ian says.

We wish Ian the best of luck on his ride and that a cure may be found as soon as possible.
