Flynn Culture

Why Talk About Culture?

  • A lot of what we do can be copied. CULTURE CANNOT and it is how we compete.
  • Flynn continues to grow!
  • Cultural “Drift” could result. What is Cultural drift = If we do not consciously identify what we value in our Flynn Culture and ensure that it is translated into daily behaviours and protected, it could change for the worse!
  • Leaders at all levels, and the positive Culture they create, is one of the most important reasons why people stay at companies. If it is negative, it is the number one reason why people leave!

What is Culture?

  • Every culture is unique. No two cultures are alike; it is a product of how everyone behaves in the organization. Leaders set the example to follow.
  • Culture is shaped at two levels.
    • Structural influences are typically those that impact many people and are often reflected in systems and policies. Examples include Pay, benefits, and Safety Rules.
    • Local influences are very personal and individual. How does your boss treat you? it is typically the local activities that have the greatest impact on an employee’s perception of the culture.

How do we Describe Flynn Culture?

There are 2 main components.

1) The first is our Vision & Mission statement.

  • We say “WE” because it’s about all of us – unified. We are one company, made up of many Teams pulling in the same direction.
  • We’re “PROUD OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE”. We all want to make a positive impact on the world, where our work has purpose and meaning.
  • “BUILDING A BRIGHT FUTURE” has a double meaning. We build physical things, but we are also building our people! And we’re also building relationships with customers and our communities!
  • We say “BRIGHT FUTURE” because we strive to be forward-looking and positive. What we do and what we build will stand the test of time.
  • “FOR OUR EMPLOYEES, CUSTOMERS AND COMMUNITIES” – We make a difference working for our main stakeholders, constantly meeting and exceeding their expectations!
  • “WHAT WE ALL DO” – We all add value to our company, and each other. Even though what we each do is very different, it is all important and is about supporting each other!
  • “HOW WE ALL DO IT” – This speaks to doing the right things the right way! Being honest and trustworthy, and delivering on our promises to our Stakeholders is part of the Flynn Way.
  • “EVERY DAY” – Means we are consistent. We do a great job EVERY TIME, and we can be trusted to deliver to our Stakeholders!

2) The second is our values statement, which is Flynn

    Family Winning Together

  • FLYNN – This is about recognizing who we are – this is our brand and we’re proud to represent it.
  • FAMILY – is about ensuring our workplace is somewhere that we WANT to be …. A place that’s safe, fun, secure, and where we CARE about and TRUST each other.
  • WINNING – We are a competitive bunch, and we’d rather win than lose! We win when customers recognize that we are the best company to deal with because we have the best people that get the job done right the first time. We win when we have the best training, tools and support systems. We win when we work together with the same goals and values. We win when we are recognized as the best place to work in our industry.
  • TOGETHER – Means we all recognize that Flynn is made up of many teams, that work together and support each other and make each other look good. Whether it’s teams at the crew level, in the office, the branch, or within shared services ….. We are really the combination of many teams, in one big value creation chain, driven by the same values!

The result, or product, of living the Vision & Mission and Flynn Family Winning Together, is what we call The Flynn Way.

If we all contribute positively to creating the Flynn culture we describe above, we will have a workplace we all want to come to every day, and a company we are proud to work for.
